    The Senior Commercial Underwriter is responsible for commercial credit analysis and underwriting relationship activities, ensuring consistency with BECU’s Member Business Lending policies and commercial credit standards.  The Senior Commercial Underwriter provides credit and loan analysis, underwriting and relationship expertise to the Business Services team and to members.  This person is responsible for making decisions on underwriting credit for the large and complex Commercial Real Estate (CRE) and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) credits.


    In this job, you will

    • Perform all responsibilities in accordance with Competencies and Information Protection requirements.
    • Act as the relationship manager and meet with existing and prospective Business Services members to determine needs and recommend solutions.
    • Coach and mentor Business Services and member-facing staff regarding Business Services products and services.
    • Analyze financial data related to new and renewal loan requests.
    • Provide recommendations to Business Services leadership on new credit requests and annual reviews.
    • Recommend and/or approve credit requests within lending authority.
    • Recommend risk ratings and pricing for each approved credit application.
    • Work effectively with business development sales teams and Business Services support staff to manage all aspects of the portfolio.
    • Work with attorneys and other financial or legal resources to obtain correct and accurate documents to fully protect BECU’s interests in the credit relationship.
    • Provide technical and consultative assistance to member contact areas regarding Business Services.
    • Negotiate credit terms, costs, repayment methods and collateral specifications, within lending authority.
    • Maintain a thorough knowledge of commercial lending policies and procedures and keep up to date on regulation changes.
    • Adhere to all BECU policies and procedures, compliance regulations, and complete all required compliance and/or job-specific training.
    • Cross-sell a full range of Business Services products and services to existing and prospective business members.
    • Maintain effective communication with all Credit Union employees to ensure coordination and exchange of information for accomplishing Credit Union goals.
    • For the purpose of attaining Credit Union goals, it is the responsibility of each employee to strive for the continuous improvement of processes and quality of service.
    • Perform additional duties as may be assigned.
    • Actively promote BECU through community involvement and/or industry related organizations.


    • Advanced analytical and problem solving skills in Commercial Real Estate (CRE) and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) lending, including in-depth knowledge of industry practices.
    • Advanced credit and credit quality skills including accounting, financial statement spreading, and cash flow analysis experience.
    • Advanced knowledge of credit policies, procedures, practices and documentation.
    • Proficient PC skills, with the ability to learn new software.
    • Excellent verbal and written skills to effectively communicate in the English language.
    • Ability to present a professional image when dealing with members, co-workers, management, and outside contacts.
    • Ability to adapt to change within working responsibilities be it internal, market, or regulatory driven.
    • Ability to work well independently, and as a team member, while using discretion in decision making and sound judgment in problem solving.
    • Effective leadership and negotiation skills.
    • Full-time hours required, with additional hours as necessary to accomplish objectives, goals, and projects.
    • Ability to sit and/or stand for periods of up to two hours or more.
    • B.A. in business, finance or related field or equivalent work or educational experience.
    • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in Commercial Real Estate (CRE) and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) analysis, underwriting and relationship management in financial institutions.
    • Minimum 5-7 years of experience using a variety of analytical tools to spread financial statements, analyze credit quality, analyze balance sheets, assess cash flow, model base case and downside forecasts, evaluate risk and support credit approval.
